F1 GP of Azerbaijan 2022: the reactions of the drivers

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 1st: “We had an incredible pace today, we had to be careful with the tyres. I managed to take the lead from Sergio Perez. We were lucky with the retirements of the two Ferraris but in any case we had the rhythm. Overall I’m happy with the balance of the car today. The key to the race was tire management. […] Each weekend is always different, you have to be precise, it depends on details in the race and it can change very quickly. »

Sergio Perez (Red Bull) – 2nd: “I was hoping for the win, but my race pace wasn’t good enough. Unfortunately I missed the stop window with the safety car. We didn’t communicate well at that time, it was a little late to get back. I had too much tire degradation during the race and that’s something we have to understand, because Max Verstappen was stronger than us on the second stint and that’s something he will have to review. […] At that point in the race, Max was faster than me. The main thing was to manage the double. It’s a good team result. »

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) – 4th: “Physically, it was the toughest race of my life. I have never felt such pain in a car. Normally it’s just physical…obviously on normal races. But there, it armed me permanently and I had points of pain permanently. But hey, I said to myself don’t give up, I managed to keep the car on the track and I got there. […] This is an incredible result for our team. Obviously the Ferraris did not finish the race, but as soon as we have solved our problems, I hope we can fight with the people in front. The question is when and will we get there? I’ll be at the factory tomorrow and we’ll work to fix the issues as quickly as possible. »

Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) – 5th: ” I’m very happy. It was a great weekend from the team and everyone. We managed to do a good qualifying yesterday and start in front. We did everything right today, even if we weren’t very lucky with the last virtual safety car. We didn’t have tires anyway, so we had to stay out, and Lewis (Hamilton) got us in the end. A top 5 after the start of the season that we had, we take it every day. »

Fernando Alonso (Alpine) – 7th: “I am happy with this 7th Pace. We executed the strategy well, facing a good start and good saves. When we can do that in Baku it automatically gives us a good place. This is the maximum we could hope for and let’s see what we can get in Canada. […] 21 years at the pinnacle of motorsport is never something easy to achieve. A lot of passion, a lot of disciplines and a lot of sacrifice to achieve it. And I’m happy to still be in Formula 1 today.”

Mattia Binotto (Ferrari): “We are not going to dramatize today either. We must understand the origin of the problems and try to solve them as a united team. Sticking together is all we need to do and pilots can also play a role here. We have to keep the good spirit and I’m sure that as a team we have done a good job to get here, we will continue to work hard and we will be even stronger in the future. It takes patience sometimes. We had a positive start to the season. Now it’s a little more complicated but it can quickly turn around. »
