Cadillac Project GTP Hypercar Looks Like Batman’s Le Mans Car

  • Cadillac has revealed the Project GTP Hypercar, previewing the endurance race car that will take on both the 2023 IMSA series and the World Endurance Championship.
  • The bodywork is far more stylized than its predecessor, with the sharp angles and vertical lighting echoing Cadillac’s road cars.
  • The GTP Hypercar will be powered by a 5.5-liter V-8 mated to a standard hybrid system mandated by IMSA and will enter its first race at the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona.

New regulations for endurance racing in 2023 are bringing an influx of manufacturer support, with companies like BMW (with its M Hybrid V8), Ferrari, Porscheand Lamborghini joining the fray. They will go up against companies like Cadillac, which has been competing in the IMSA championship with its DPi-VR since 2017, racking up 24 wins in 50 races. Now Cadillac is previewing its next-generation racer, dubbed the Project GTP Hypercar, which will take on both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023.

The Project GTP Hypercar is dramatically styled, with tones of sharp edges and aggressive, aerodynamic surfaces. The GTP is significantly wider than the current crop of DPi top-class race cars and is more distinctly Cadillac, with vertical headlights and taillights echoing the long-standing design language of Cadillac’s road cars. Forged carbon fiber is ubiquitous, appearing in the front splitter, side sills, engine cover, and rear diffuser. The see-through fin extending from the narrow cabin provides a unique look, although Cadillac said that some materials may change when the GTP hits the track next year.

The rule set that governs the next generation of IMSA’s top class requires the cars to use a chassis from one of four manufacturers as well as a standard hybrid system, mated to an engine of their choice. The Cadillac will ride on a Dallara chassis and will pair the hybrid setup with a double-overhead-cam 5.5-liter V-8, exclusively powering the rear wheels.

Cadillac plans to run full seasons in both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the World Endurance Championship. On-track testing is set to start this summer, and the GTP Hypercar’s first race will be at the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona early next year.
