Fernando Alonso pulls off the surprise in the rain ahead of Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel. Summary and ranking of the third practice session of the 2022 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix.
The rain invited herself to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuveon the occasion of the second day of practice and qualification. The pilots rode exclusively on intermediate or maxi-wet tyres. It was very complicated for them to get the tires into the right temperature window. But fortunately, no one was fooled in these wet conditions. A crash would be disastrous 2 hours before the qualifying session.
The teams have 3 maxi-wet tires and 3 intermediate tyres. The objective is therefore to save as much rubber sets as possible for qualifying. It’s a huge challenge that awaits the pilots.
Surprisingly, Fernando Alonso (P1) and Pierre Gasly (P2) were the fastest. The double world champion took advantage of the hazardous conditions to get out of the game, as since the start of the weekend. Just behind follow Sebastian Vettel, Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo.
The Red Bull appeared very unstable. The warming up of the tires is a real problem in the Austrian clan which suffers on wet track. Max Verstappen (P8) even bothered to get a few scares. Same observation for Ferrari which was ultimately non-existent with only one car on the track. Charles Leclerc did not bother to get out and damage the car, while the latter receives a penalty of 10 places on the starting grid.
It is therefore a completely crazy qualifying session which is announced for the return of the Canadian Grand Prixafter 2 years of absence. The session will be to follow live on our live text:
